3 Apr

Celebrations following Easter (Semana Santa) continue in the area.Just south of us in Murcia the capitals biggest festivities are being celebrated.

All this week some very enjoyable and indeed colourful festivals are taking place. Some of those on offer are the Spring Festival (Fiesta de Primavera), the Bands of the Countryside Festival (Bando de la Huerta) and the Burial of the Sardine (Entierro de la Sardina).

The parade of flowers, known as Murcia en Primavera, is a parade of floats decorated with fresh flowers going through the city, and in their path they adorn them with petals. They are accompanied by animated groups and music bands.

The Bando de la Huerta, is said to be one of the best days of the Spring Festivals, thousands of people dressed in typical Murcian costume, parade and dance through streets. It is said to be an unforgettable sight.

Now the burying of a Sardine, yes you heard it right, Murcia city closes its main streets to celebrate this pagan festival. The charanga bands and processions adorn the streets to bid adios to this fish. With the sound of music, whistles, and an abundance of colour some say it is more than a carnival itself.

Barraca Huertanas (huts representing country houses) are assembled in the streets offering tapas, drink, demonstrations of crafts, throughout the duration of the festivities.

So for some Murcian culture, head along to the city for these festivities, further information can be found at https://www.eurotourguide.com/en/costa-blanca-south/events-calendar/murcia-spring-festivals
